Outstanding learners and amazing explorers!

We have had three thrilling weeks in Orion class starting our topic about explorers, as we have started to read ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell. Thanks to a reptile loving explorer who recommended the book to us. We are really enjoying the story so far although “Our teacher keeps leaving us on the Cliffhangers,” we can’t wait to read on. In this roller-coaster of a week, we have continued our learning on fabulous fractions. We have been ordering and comparing fractions with Harry (a made up confused explorer) who said “if the numbers on the fraction are bigger then of course the fraction is bigger!” However we disagreed with Harry, by proving he was incorrect using models, drawings and changing our denominators so that they are the same. We have also enjoyed sequencing fractions on a number line. In energetic English, we have ‘taken flight’ with our relative pronouns (for example who, which, whose, whom, that, where and when). We learnt all about how to use these then we ...

A brilliant start to Term 5!

What an enjoyable summery week we have had, the weather has been beautiful, which has meant that we have been able to take some of our learning outside. Orion class are also really excited to celebrate our learning, as we will be having our reward for filling our Lego jar from last term. We hope to fill it up again quickly so that we get another reward this term! As quick as a flash, we have been able to use Brackets, commas and dashes in our writing, this is called parenthesis. A member of our class said, ”Parenthesis is when you’re adding more information to our sentences.” In our fabulous Maths lessons we have been continuing our learning all about Fractions; we have been practising how to turn improper fractions into mixed numbers. If you would like to see any of our lovely work this week, just ask! We would love to show you as we are really proud of our learning. Joke of the week (linked to our learning) – Who invented fractions? Henry the Eighth! We hope y...

The Groovy Greek Week!

Some of you may know that we have been learning about Ancient Greece this term. On Wednesday the 28 th March, Orion class put on a fabulous Greek Museum with Year 6. We had six different stations including Democracy in Ancient Greece, Ancient Greek Science and Architecture, Women and Men in Ancient Greece, Olympics in Ancient Greece, Ancient Greek Theatre and Greek Myths. We really enjoyed our Greek museum although it did require a great deal of planning and preparation. Thank you to all of you that came along and we hope that you enjoyed it! Linking to our Greek topic, we have been writing our own non-chronological report on Ancient Greece. We chose three topics to write about and shared our fantastic fun facts with each other. Overall we have really enjoyed our learning about Ancient Greece this term and we are looking forward to our next terrific topic. Miss Aston, Mrs Ross and Mrs Barfoot say “well done for being outstanding learners, have the most wonderful Easter break a...

An ‘Egg’cellent week!

We have had an enjoyable week especially today as we are in non-school uniform and have bought in lots of lovely chocolate. Thank you for everybody that has donated! We have also started to prepare for our Greek Museum afternoon, which we are really excited about and hope that you can join us. A letter will be on the way next week. One Orion class member says “This week in English, we have been learning about    co-coordinating and subordinating conjunctions to link clauses. At first, we found this tricky but now we are really understanding, how to use them in our writing.” After that, we watched the Pixar film called ‘lifted’ and then did some writing about it to show our teachers that we can use, FANBOYS and I SAW A WABUB. If you aren’t sure what this means, just ask us! In Maths, we have finished our topic on division which some of us found tricky to start with. We all ‘persevered’ and we are all feeling much more confident! As a result of mastering division Miss A...

Our Brilliant first week of Term 4!

We have had an enjoyable first week back, as well as submitting our 500 words stories to the BBC competition we have also been making clay pots in art, we have been re-enacting Ancient Greek Myths through drama including Thesus and the Minatour and we can also talk about the weather in French. In English, we have been learning about different sentence types also different types of nouns. One Orion classmate said “I didn’t realise how many different types of nouns there were!” “For example compound, proper, common, abstract and collective nouns.” We gave our learning a big thumbs up! In Maths, we have been enjoying finishing our learning about long multiplication, we have been focusing on multiplying 4 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers using the column method. Our teacher has been so proud of how we have been learning and we are ready for the challenge of division next week! This week we have had some more superstars completing their Maths challenges, we had five of them in f...

Our wonderful week at school with exhilarating scientific experiments!

Our fabulous week has been filled with excitement, especially in RE where we have been looking at the importance of stories to the Sikh religion. We looked at the story ‘The milk and the Jasmine flower’ which we acted out and discussed its special meaning. We are really looking forward to making clay pots in art to represent kindness to others. In English, we’ve been starting to write our BBC 500 words story focusing on ensuring that we have a super ending. You might wonder why we are starting at the end of our story? Did you know that many authors, such as JK Rowling, write the ending of their last book before they even start writing their first book!   In Maths, we have been enjoying learning about long multiplication; we have been exploring how models link to the column method. For example, why we need to use a zero as a place holder. This week’s super Science has been a blast; we sorted materials into groups using a Venn diagram. We explored different scientific stat...

This week in Orion class, we have been settling in very well and getting to know our new teacher Miss Aston better. An Orion classmate said “Our new teacher Miss Aston is very kind and we have lovely rewards for our excellent learning!” Furthermore, to help us with our excellent learning, we have lots of new resources around the room such as ‘The 4 B’s.’ In English this week, we’ve been starting to plan our BBC 500 words story for the national competition. We have had very exciting ideas including Bob the Lego man saving the world! Also in Maths, we have been enjoying learning about place value and column multiplication; although some of us have found it tricky we all helped each other with fantastic teamwork. Guess what … we also have a superstar in our class who has completed their Fast Maths 5 minute chall...
